I had to cancel my membership at the local printmaking studio, and I didn't have any presses if my own. I wanted to print make in some way. The only thing I had in my studio that could replicate images was a cheap all in one printer, I'm a bit of a traditionalist and love using physical media over digital and didn't want to just print out something I did on the computer, that's where the watercolour, pastel and real objects came in.

The overall effect also fits in well with my current project The Pale House, an exploration of an old house where things are not quite as it seems...

Full description

In the Pale House moths inhabit the quiet spaces, they rest on long walls, unnoticed and still.

This technique uses both traditional media and the use of a colour photocopier to create the final image. A background is created on a piece of paper using watercolour and pastel, it is then placed in the photocopier on top of real moths, and photocopied. The print out from that is then manipulated with pastel, pencil and watercolour. The process is repeated several times. The last print out has one final layer of pastel added.

The moths I use are from old collections that have been given to me. I'd never harm any animal to make art. Moths to me are very special little creatures and deserve way more credit than they are due!
