The principal inspiration for a piece like this is to impose a design on a surface that will fight back, From step one I know I will have to compromise. The material is almost intractable and at the most critical moment the elements of the design, the colours to be scrolled and swirled, are invisible. At the end of the day I have to surrender. At best the piece I offer the customer is a compromise. The consolation is, it is unique.

This bowl is a copper bowl decorated with glass enamel.
The bowl is 74mm in diameter and 20mm deep. You might use it as a dressing table tray or a table centrepiece. Among other uses, customers at fairs have suggested that my bowls may be just the thing to use to drop a tea bag on when you take it from your mug or cup or may make good soap dishes.
The bowl is counter-enamelled black on the reverse. This is for technical reasons. The counter enamel balances the tensions to which the bowl is subject when each of the layers of enamel is fired at 700 degrees centigrade to fuse them as I build up the decorative surface.
I made the pattern on the bowl by drawing a steel tip through the surface while the bowl was in the kiln at 700 degrees, but cooling as the kiln door was open. In this situation the colours cannot be distinguished and the enamel is solidifying around the steel point. At the end of the day I accept the design the process allows me.
Your bowl will be sent by Royal Mail, first class, signed for.
