This is a silver brooch molded from a pewter Medieval pilgrim’s badge found in the Thames. St Peter is depicted in his role as doorkeeper of Heaven seen here with his key. It was common practice for Medieval pilgrims to wear badges collected at religious shrines and they were often thrown into the Thames at the end of a pilgrimage in the hope the offering would bring salvation or prosperity.
