Spalting occurs when wood is left lying on the ground after felling. It is a totally random effect of a form of mould. If left it can rot the wood, if caught at just the right time, the result can be stunning, This is such a piece.

Full description
A Chunky piece of spalted Beech (Fagus Sylvatica) with amazing markings.
Made into a simple Pin dish or key tray or just keep your loose coins in it.
Quite heavy as I have left it chunky to display the Spalting.
Finished with good quality wood wax.
The pencil is there just to show the size, which is just over 6 inches diameter 2 inches deep.
