Item details

The Ayrshire coast is an area that I just love. Fortunately for me I only live 20 minutes from this beautiful coastline.

It was on one of my many walks on Barassie beach that I started to notice the beauty of the seaweed washed-up or growing on the rocks.

I only take seaweed that is washed up!

Full description

This is not a print, it is the real thing.

Saccharina latissima is in the family of brown seaweeds popularly referred to as kelp and scientifically known as laminarians. S. latissima is a large seaweed with a fairly broad blade, up to 20 cm (8 inches) wide, that can grow up to 5 meters (16 feet) long or longer.

I harvested this seaweed from Barassie Beach, Ayrshire, Scotland.

The seaweed was then soaked and cleaned in salty water. Once completely clean it was then very carefully laid out on mounting board and pressed for two weeks.

This process can be a bit 'hit or miss' as colours can change under pressure, and the seaweed can tear during the pressing process.

It is worth the wait for the ones that work!
