Coptic binding is one of the oldest forms of bookbinding, dating back to the 2nd century AD.
Coptic bindings are characterized by sections of paper sewn through their folds and attached to each other with chain stitch linkings across the spine of the book.
Cyanotype Printing is Eco-friendly all the way …
The subjects for my artwork are wildflowers or flowers from my garden, which Nature produces for me in abundance!
And I use the sun to develop the prints … as an energy source, you can’t get more sustainable than that!
The cartridge paper is recycled from old coffee cups.
The grey-board used for the covers is also, wherever possible, made from recycled materials.
That makes my hand bound books very Earth-friendly stationery indeed.
This book is unique and made entirely by hand … this is not just a book, it is a unique piece of art!

Because Your Memories Are Worth It
The covers for this A4 hand bound photograph album are original cyanotype prints, featuring different kinds of Umbelliferae from the hedgerows around my Wiltshire home. Umbelliferae are wonderful subjects for cyanotype prints.
Sometimes they look like starbursts, sometimes like snowflakes; I think these ones look like fireworks.
During the wet cyanotype development process, I often use inks and dyes to add a little something extra. For these prints, I used a dash of gold ink and a sprinkling of jade green dyes. I also used some salt and vinegar. The salt gives a lovely crystalline effect, and the vinegar softens the cyanotype blues.
The inside covers are made using handmade Nepalese Lokta paper in a gorgeous dark turquoise.
The book is stitched together with Royal Blue Irish Linen waxed 4-ply thread.
I used Coptic stitching to bind the book together, which means that the book will lie completely flat when opened, which means that this book is perfect as a photograph album and would also make a wonderful sketch book.
The pages of this book were created using recycled A2 White Craft Card at a nice heavy weight of 220gsm, which makes it perfect for photograph albums. It would also work wonderfully well as an artist's sketchbook … you can stick lots of great craft materials on this card for a beautiful finish. As it's 100% recycled it has a slight texture to it which is great for crayons, pastel, and paint work.
