Whilst these days I work mainly with fabric, I'm also a poet & Finding My Tail is my collection of poetry.
Containing 84 poems in total, it starts with a year long selection inspired by nature & the seasons, before moving on to an appreciation of life & all that makes its pattern – the long warp threads of family, love & creativity, the weft of encounters, journeys & experiences, including half a dozen of the poems I wrote whilst undergoing treatment for breast cancer in 2011 (drip stands are contrary blighters). And of course fabric & sewing appear from time to time as metaphor & symbolism:
Storm in May
The sky,
unable to decide
between smooth, blue satin
and white, broderie frills,
grows petulant,
hauls on a thick, grey hoodie,
grumbles, slams, bangs;
fills the air
with sulky electricity,
before bursting
into hot angry tears.
Twenty minutes pass,
the sobbing ceases
and she opts for denim
with a full spectrum
chiffon scarf.
Touching on subjects as diverse as astrology, the 100m Final & the slightly sinister nature of cold fish fingers, the collection is rounded off with a haiku advent calendar & my Christmas poems from 2004 to 2012 (which can also be found in my Decorating the Tree pamphlet). And yes, the cover image, was based upon my own illustration, which later became the reference image for my Capricorn embroidery.
Please let me know, when you order, if you wish me to sign your book.
