I love collecting things that have been discarded, lost, forgotten, damaged or just not wanted any more. My favourite places are rivers and beaches, but also find great things at recycling centres and charity shops. I’m lucky to live near the River Tees, Co Durham and often walk the banks picking up broken glass, pottery anything that can be cleaned and re-created into something new. Bits and bobs of lives all waiting to find new homes.
Using shards of ceramic found in rivers is exciting and thrilling. I love the entire experience from walking, looking, peering into the water and discovering bits and bobs of all sorts. I’ve found many strange and amazing things. All shards used have a letter F for family and S for Shards and a number that relates to order of process.

Additional terms
Hand crafted Jewellery and framed artworks using pre loved and discarded ceramics. Ceramic material will show signs of wear and damage. Entire process is a creative experience from discovery to final picture, nothing planned or preconceived. All materials personally collected from river banks, charity shops, roadside, woods, recycle centres, beaches, wherever dropped, dumped or donated ceramics are found, cleaned and shaped into new stories. Each titled piece comes with bio of where the ceramic came from, known history, original information and when the artwork was created. Some ceramics collected are used as found, while others are cut randomly which will shape the final picture. Every piece is individual, nothing replicated, however, due to repetitive patterns in ceramics there will be some similarity but only through the ceramic material not in the final piece.

Created from ceramic discovered in
Thorsgill Beck, nr Barnard Castle May 2021
Re-Created into Earrings June 2021
In May 2021 while out walking Thorsgill Beck that runs into the River Tees, Barnard Castle, Co Durham I came across a small concentration of broken bits of pottery. A common practice of shoring up a river bank is to use hardcore that often has household ceramics crushed in. On this sunny day I found quite a few pieces of plates in one concentrated spot. The pieces were dirty and looked lost in the water for a long time. After soaking some were still stained, others cleaned well and all came back to life.
These earrings are made from a small shard found under a rock, I first noticed an old paste jar sticking up out of the water when I moved a rock to get the jar I saw this lovely little shard, stained and battered. Two intact leaf shapes and one leaf shape scratched and too broken to use.
I wasn’t sure if anything could be made from the little piece but took the chance and it broke into two lovely similar shaped bits. All I’ve done is lightly sand and seal the edges. I positioned the posts at the top of the shape so the earring hangs down a little, one of the earrings as you can see from the photographs has a small grey line at the top, this is part of the marks from its journey down the river and I couldn’t manage to remove it.
Sterling silver 925 post and back.
Each earring measures approximately 18mm x 9mm x 2mm.
