I love collecting, especially things that have been discarded. Anything that looks lost, forgotten or damaged and not wanted any more. Favourite places of mine to discover bits is rivers or beaches. I am lucky to live near the River Tees, Co Durham and often walk the banks picking up broken glass, pottery anything that can be cleaned and re-created into something new. Another amazing place is recycling centres where for very little I can rescue an old pot or plate. Charity shops have so many interesting pieces, bits and bobs of lives all waiting to find new homes.

For me using shards of ceramic found in rivers is a passion. I love the entire experience from walking, looking, peering into the water and discovering bits and bobs of all sorts. I’ve found many strange and amazing things. This small greeny browny piece was sitting face down just in the river, Abbey Lane, Eggleston Abbey, Barnard Castle.

Additional terms

Hand crafted Jewellery and framed artworks using pre loved and discarded ceramics. Ceramic material will show signs of wear. Entire process is a creative experience from discovery to final picture, nothing planned or preconceived. All materials personally collected from river banks, charity shops, roadside, woods, recycle centres, beaches, wherever dropped, dumped or donated ceramics are found, cleaned and shaped into new stories. Each titled piece comes with bio of where the ceramic came from, known history, original information and when the artwork was created. Some ceramics collected are used as found, while others are cut randomly which will shape the final picture. Every piece is individual, nothing replicated, however, due to repetitive patterns in ceramics there will be some similarity but only through the ceramic material not in the final piece.

Created from ceramic discovered

in River Tees October 2019

Re-Created into earrings

December 2020

In October 2019 while out walking the banks of the River Tees, Barnard Castle, Co Durham I came across a small concentration of broken bits of pottery. A common practice of shoring up a river bank is to use hardcore that often has household ceramics crushed in. I particularly love finding bits of pot in rivers, I love the idea of old household unwanted ceramic being used, all those memories. Some bits will remain where dumped but a lot will move with the river which adds to the experience of discovering.

I found a piece of green ceramic, the colour is difficult to describe because it has a light brown type of pattern which feels part of the green. After thoroughly cleaning I gently clipped it with a small tile cutter which created just 2 pieces. Very similar in size and shape Ithought the shards would make lovely earrings.

Full drop approximately 4cm

Both earrings are approximately 20mm x 9mm x 3mm

Sterling Silver hooks, stainless steel clasp.

I enjoy creating reworked ceramic jewellery that retains its own character, although cleaned the pieces show marks, this is river damage, part of the journey. These earrings are created from ceramic that has lived a life, ended up in the River Tees and now living again as jewellery.

Delivered in a small gift box, gift bag made from recycled materials and includes a short bio.
