I love collecting, especially things that have been discarded. Anything that looks lost, forgotten or damaged and not wanted any more. Favourite places of mine to discover bits is rivers or beaches. I am lucky to live near the River Tees, Co Durham and often walk the banks picking up broken glass, pottery anything that can be cleaned and re-created into something new. I love recycling centres and charity shops where I can find an old pot or plate, so many interesting pieces, bits and bobs of lives all waiting to find new homes.
For me using shards of ceramic found in rivers is interesting, exciting and a passion. I love the entire experience from walking, looking, peering into the water and discovering bits and bobs of all sorts. I’ve found many strange and amazing things. All shards used have a letter F for family and S for Shards and a number that relates to order of process.

Additional terms
Shards Hand crafted Jewellery and framed artworks using pre loved and discarded ceramics. Ceramic material will show signs of wear. Entire process is a creative experience from discovery to final picture, nothing planned or preconceived. All materials personally collected from river banks, charity shops, roadside, woods, recycle centres, beaches, wherever dropped, dumped or donated ceramics are found, cleaned and shaped into new stories. Each titled piece comes with bio of where the ceramic came from, known history, original information and when the artwork was created. Some ceramics collected are used as found, while others are cut randomly which will shape the final picture. Every piece is individual, nothing replicated, however, due to repetitive patterns in ceramics there will be some similarity but only through the ceramic material not in the final piece.

Pendant
Created from ceramic discovered
in River Tees January 2021
Re-Created into pendant February 2021
In January 2021 while out walking the banks of the River Tees, Barnard Castle, Co Durham I came across a small concentration of broken bits of pottery. A common practice of shoring up a river bank is to use hardcore that often has household ceramics crushed in.. Some bits will remain where dumped but a lot will move with the river which adds to the experience of discovering.
I found this little blue striped piece of pottery in the river Tees, the river was calm but the previouse few days had been rainy – the rain churns up the river and all sorts can be found.
I love the shape and have only slightly sanded then sealed the sharp edges. I prefer to just slightly work on the shard and retain it’s original state I found it in. The pieces I create are not perfect and are often stained or chipped, I intentionally leave these marks but thoroughly clean each piece.
Front facing the blue stripe design still has the glaze in tact but the top where I’ve drilled the hole was damaged and the glaze worn off. The rear has no glaze left. I have sealed the areas where no glaze remains but left the blue stripe design as found.
The pendant is hanging on non leather woven cord, 44cm plus 5cm extender.
Shard measures approxiamtely 18mm x 15mm x 3mm.
