Wrens, I love them. I’m always happy if I glimpse one when I’m out walking and overjoyed if it’s pinging about in my garden. So capturing a wren in clay means I can see it every day and imagine it in my house.

This is my version of the wrens I see.

I begin by making a pinch pot in stoneware clay, then add the features and model them to give character. The tilt of the beak or the angle of the tail giving each bird its own personality.

I’ve used a matte glaze, which breaks into several shades over a subtle blue and brown range, breaking over the carved details on its body to show the modelling involved.

My pottery is handmade in small numbers and I return to this little bird time after time.

Only a tiny thing, around 4.5 cm high and 4 cm in length.

Ideal small gift for anyone who loves birds and nature.

I try to recycle and reuse packaging but not at the expense of safe travel.
