Ever since I discovered a tattoo hiding on my Grandad’s calf under his trouser leg I have been fascinated with them. I couldn’t have been much older than four years, he was the most unlikely man to have had a tattoo.
When he was stationed in India waiting to go into Burma in the Second World War he got very drunk and had a dagger with a ribbon with Nellie (my Nan's name) tattooed upon his calf. It was proper old school... I loved it and would regularly sit by his feet and start pulling his trouser leg up to see it , much to his annoyance, but he would let me.
This has left me with a life long love of tattoo art even though I have none myself. I love the simplicity of the use of bold lines and colours in the old tattoos and how over time they change colour and bleed.
I really admire tattoo artists and how with the advancement of equipment and inks, they have taken the old school ideas to another level in recent years.
So again my Grandad is the root inspiration for this piece.

In the world of tattoo art, mermaids are a recurring theme.
From my own original drawing which I drew in a tattoo art style, I have created this unique piece of hand embroidered textile art to adorn any wall.
I have hand stitched her with vintage DMC and Anchor threads using various embroidery techniques on to raw linen.
I have used a black back stitch to create her bold outline, just like a real tattoo.
Along side this I used chain stitch to give the illusion of flowing hair in a bright and dark green thread.
I have decorated her tail in French knots and seed stitches. These are in purple, teal, bright and forest green.
Finally, her heart that she is giving away is filled with satin stitch.
In the traditional manner I have laced and stretched this piece of embroidery art over acid free mount board then framed in a gold wooden vintage frame without glass as it distorts the stitches.
The frame is 41cm x 29.5cm and 3cm deep.
Without the frame this piece of textile art measures 34.5cm x 23cm.
As this frame is vintage it has lived a life and has a few scratches and scuffs, I feel this adds to its appeal.
Postage is included in the price, I will send Royal Mail Special Delivery as this is a unique piece.
If you have the time please have a look around my shop you may find some more tattoo style embroideries there.
Many thanks
