Hello and welcome! This page is home to Beaded Beasties: mixed media box frames of dragonflies and other creatures in a mini environment. Each one unique, made from new and recycled materials. I hope you love what you see.

This piece was 'born' when I matched the pearl jewellery and the icicle decoration to make a distinctive and striking dragonfly which inspired the rest.

The title Winter Emperor might suggest something of legendary status and this dragonfly is definitely a worthy candidate! The real-life emperor dragonfly is one of the UK's largest.
This bead version is made from a large teardrop-shaped pearl jewellery piece added to a silvered icicle decoration making it 18.5 cm (7.25 ins) long. Two silver-coloured mesh chains have been wrapped around the icicle spiral giving extra bulk. Multi-crystal beads have been used for the eyes. The wings are made from printed acetate film.
The background setting uses a crocheted wire bracelet dotted with beads and larger glass crystals that, with a little imagination, resemble a snowman in front of a bare winter hedge! All around, ring links and larger silver washers are stylised falling snow and an ice crusted tree stands to one side. A silver beaded disc represents the late afternoon moon and gunmetal-coloured snake chain forms a landscape silhouette along the bottom completing an unusual and inventive scene.
The black box frame is 25.5 cm (10 ins) square and 4.5 cm deep with a saw-tooth hanger on the back. This Beaded Beastie artwork would make an ideal gift for any insect lover and can be displayed all year long, either as a wall hanging or propped on a shelf or mantlepiece.
