I have decorated this brooch with a scrolled technique. Enamels are particularly adapted to this technique and it is very effective in rendering a butterfly.
After building up a solid base of several layers of either white or clear enamel I add a single layer of coloured enamel. After firing that I add other colours randomly, either by scattering small heaps of enamel powder on the base or by setting sections of enamel rod on it. When the piece reaches red heat in the kiln I draw through the surface with a steel point to disturb the colours and draw them into a pattern. This is not a controlled activity in the sense that the colours move in ways i can predict and arrange; I get what the material allows.
Each pattern is unique.

This brooch measures 35mm by 18mm. I have soldered it to a simple pin catch.
I have scattered white, purple and blue enamel over layers of clear enamel built up on the copper base. The copper shows through the other colours in tones of golden brown, varying with the intensity of light striking the brooch.
