I am a huge fan of woodblock prints, especially those by Japanese ukiyo-e artists. Coming from a print background myself, I admire the draftsmanship and patience involved in relief printing - etching, or drawing the desired pattern onto a large block, covering that design in ink or dye, and eventually stamping it onto the fabric one colour at a time. As a screen printer I am always striving to achieve quality of the same standard.

A fine art print of an original illustration based on The Great Wave off Kanagawa Japanese woodblock print by ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai.
This uchi art print, entitled ‘Soundwave off Kanagawa‘ adds a new drama to the original with a redrawn Wave and a new boat and figures, not to mention the girl and her music.
In the traditional ukiyo-e prints there is usually something going on whether mundane or dramatic and so I wanted to change the story of the original. The people in the boat are based on figures depicted in the ukiyo-e print “Tea house at Koishikawa. The morning after a snowfall” I like the idea of the water waves and sound waves affecting each other and the boat, tethered to the headphones, being tossed around by the sound/waves.
