Item details

Hello and welcome! This page is home to Beaded Beasties: mixed media box frames of dragonflies and other creatures in a mini environment. Each one unique, made from new and recycled materials. I hope you love what you see.

Do please also take a look at my other page: DArTworld - Digital Imaginings for greetings and occasion cards and prints.

The shape of these beads suggested a different style for this dragonfly and I was keen to use them in an open frame that allows the detail to be seen more closely.

Full description

The 'Mahogany Hawker' dragonfly doesn't exist in nature but the name sounds much more evocative than the real Brown Hawker (!) and perfectly suits the rich colours of this piece. This frame is also unusual because it doesn't have any glass and the materials are surface mounted which allows greater appreciation of its three-dimensional nature.

The dragonfly is made from all recycled beads in wood, glass, metal and acrylic, each topped with a golden decoration. The head particularly is a large, antiqued metal bead with a filigree design. The wings have been cut from an old greetings card, again featuring rich complimentary colours.

Grasses are cut from recycled cards and the reeds are cotton cord. There is also a miniature golden seedhead and three tiny daisy spacer beads. Natural pebbles and grit complete the reedbed. Everything is mounted on a printed watercolour-effect background paper.

The white frame is 26.5cm (10.5 ins) high, 20.5cm wide and 3.5cm deep. It can be wall hung or freestanding.

PLEASE NOTE: this is not a toy and small children must not be allowed to play with it.
