Item details
I was just making a box with timber I had to hand. I love Pine, the grain, the smell: and it is a locally grown timber that I think is much maligned. To me the main points were the ebony strip in the lid and the keys to reinforce the mitres on the lid; for which I had just made a special jig to allow me to use my router table to make the slots to insert the hard wood keys. A light coat of melamine lacquer, which Chestnut products say is safe for toys, with a bees wax finish over the top to add a nice lustre. Brass hinges, chain and catch add to the traditional, minimalist feel, as does the plywood base.
